Of course! So a petticoat is technically just a broad term for any type of supportive underskirt that is worn under a dress. They are typically made of soft to semi-stiff fabrics like cotton, silk, or nylon, and do not contain rigid support structures. When people refer to a petticoat specifically, they usually mean a loose and flowy underskirt (unlike a slip, which is straight and closer to the body) that provides modest volume, like an a-line silhouette, and supports the outer skirt. Multiple petticoats can be layered on top of one another to create more volume, or even just to provide warmth. A crinoline is a specific type of petticoat that provides dramatic volume and is designed specifically to hold out voluminous skirts, like ballgowns. It’s more of a rigid support structure made of multiple heavy, stiff layers of netting, such as nylon or tulle- kind of like a long ballerina tutu! There are also hoop skirts which use metal hoops to create volume instead of many layers of netting like a crinoline, you’ve probably seen them before in historical movies or costumes. You can still find them today, they actually have a bunch on Amazon and people still wear them under wedding dresses sometimes. They’re not as flexible as crinoline and can make it kind of hard to sit down though, because the hoops keep their shape no matter what. As far as what to choose- it really depends on how much volume the skirt of your dress allows, and how much volume you want! I’d recommend going with something that is slightly less voluminous than your dress, so your dress still drapes nicely like it was intended to and doesn’t look tightly stuffed. There are a lot of different shapes and sizes of petticoats and crinolines on Amazon that are actually very inexpensive, I’d order a few different sizes that you think you’d like and try them on and see what looks best, and then send the others back. Personally I don’t think that you need a ton of volume because it could potentially look odd if your skirt was wider than your train. I’d go with something that gives you a fuller a-line silhouette, definitely not anything huge like a ballgown because I don’t think that your dress was designed to be quite that full in the skirt anyway. Most any kind of petticoat is called a crinoline on Amazon if you’re looking there, so don’t let it confuse you. My comment about wearing a petticoat under crinoline was more about comfort, because tulle and nylon netting is stiff and scratchy and doesn’t feel very good on your skin. If you can find a more subtly shaped crinoline that’s already lined, then that would be perfect, and if not you can try to find a cotton or satin petticoat/slip to go underneath. Here’s a few I found that might work: These look less full: https://a.co/d/0hJYjuB3 https://a.co/d/021yiiWE This one looks more full and actually seems to be really nice based on the review pictures: https://a.co/d/0b2gyW27 This one seems very voluminous, maybe too much volume for your dress? You’d have to try it and see I think: https://a.co/d/0ccWtOjs This one has some hoops but doesn’t seem too full, one of the reviews said that they liked that it kept their skirt clear from their feet when they were walking and that seems like a plus, you might even be able to remove a few of the hoops if you wanted: https://a.co/d/00G5o01S If you have any other questions, or if I can help with anything else let me know!! If you order any PLEASE send me pictures when you try them on with your dress, I’m dying to see it!! ❤️
