I have bad knees and don't like bending over to weed my garden. I usually use a dandelion weeder. It has to be one of the ones with a long handle. I jab it under the base of the weed against the roots, and hit the end of the tool with a rubber mallet. Some weeds have tough roots and take some effort to get through, but I've always managed it.
