Iceland actually did this. Except it too 2+ years and a massive engineered seawater pumping system to divert a lava flow that was gonna cut off a towns harbor. John Mcphee talks about it in his book "the control of nature". Also talks about the mississippi river control, and the mudslides/fires in california.
