True, but remember that in 1981, a microwave oven cost about $470, which was a significant purchase for most families. (That’s actually how much it cost back then, not in 2026 dollars.) The most expensive microwave I can find at Walmart today is $150 (excluding models that are combination microwave ovens and air fryers). So, they’ve gone from being a major expense that bordered on being a luxury item to something that’s approaching disposable, at least compared to other major kitchen appliances. They’re not built to last anymore, but you’re not paying for built to last, either. If you want high-quality, you can get one from a restaurant supply company, but you’ll pay more, too.
