I never had luck with the nail soaking tubs. Took forever and really dried out my skin even with adding coconut oil. I change my nails out every week so I needed something to speed up the process a little bit.So I use two different extra coarse bits. The flat top to take out the majority and then the round top to get the edges. The more you take off the less it has to penetrate through. Then I use the onyx acetone on some cotton and use the nail tip holders and let it soak. I check after maybe 5-10 minutes depending on how impatient I am and rub it a bit and see if it needs to continue to soak or not.I’ve been doing this for almost 2 years now and it works the best for me. Congratulations on tackling your nail bitting! I too was a biter for well over 50 years before I kicked the habit. Use cuticle oil multiple times a day. Use a jojoba oil based cuticle oil (if it has vitamin E that’s a bonus). This will be the one thing that will make the biggest impact in improving your nails and proximal nail fold (what you call cuticles). The oil should eliminate the hard skin you are still biting. Until you have grown out all of the damaged nail, which can take a year or more, you should keep the shaping square. Before you get to round or oval nails, you need to develop the structure to support your nail beyond the free edge. Without the nail bed structure, your nails will crack and/or break, no matter how well you are treating your nails. You only want to file your nail straight across or in the square shape. You can file off the sharp corners, but you do not want to file the sidewalls along the side of your finger. Once your nails are strong and the structure has been developed, you can start shaping them as desired. Just keep in mind that you never want to file the sidewalls. If you develop a hangnail, use nippers to nip it off. If you desire to wear air dry lacquer, feel free to do so. You will need a basecoat, lacquer and quick dry top coat. If you are interested in indie nail polish, I can highly recommend Cracked Polish. The polish formulas are phenomenal, easy to apply, and self level. If you have ridges on your nails, use the ridge filler base coat. If not, then use the sticky base coat. Apply 1 layer of basecoat, 2-3 layers of lacquer (color), and one layer of quick dry top coat. Generally, there is no need to wait between layers. Each layer you apply rewets the layers below. The exception to this is using a flakie polish. Flakie layers need to dry a few minutes so that the next layer doesn’t move around the flakes of the previous layer. Once the QDTC is applied, it will take about 15 minutes until your nails are dry to the touch, but you should be careful for the next hour or so. If polish ever becomes thick, gloopy, difficult to apply, it needs to be thinned with nail polish thinner containing only Butyl Acetate and Ethyl Acetate. KBShimmer’s is the least expensive on the indie side. When choosing a lacquer color, choose a cream, jelly, shimmer or multichrome initially. Magnetics are beautiful but time-consuming and can be frustrating for a newbie. Flakie polish is beautiful and glitter polish is flashy and gorgeous but can be difficult to remove without nail clips. You will also need 100% acetone, cotton balls or wipes to remove the polish. If you want to do a full manicure you will need cuticle remover (Blue Cross) and orange sticks and a nail file (etched glass is the best, Emory boards are sufficient). Surprisingly, not too difficult! I soak my nails in acetone with these for like 5-10 minutes while watching tv and it mostly comes right off! I use a nail brush to scrub off any remaining bits with soap and water (usually they’ve loosened up enough from the acetone soak so I don’t use remover again).

Do yourself a favor and get a set of nail clips for soaking the polish off. Soak the wipe in 100% acetone or cotton ball, place on finger nail, secure with clip. Let soak for a couple minutes, remove clip, swipe the wipe off and remove any remnants. Here is what they look like you might be able to find them at the dollar store. https://a.co/d/0gTfelUi
