I bought a post-war Universal M-1 a couple months ago, and while I've been having a ball with it, I have had a couple issues. First being the scope mount, which is aluminum, and the previous owner seems to have stripped a couple of the screw holes a bit. When the scope is aligned it works beautifully and the thing is a real tack driver, but no matter how much thread lock I use, the screws loosen up, the scope drifts off center and my marksmanship (which is barely tolerable at best) suffers. The other problem was the rear sight. I was at my local range, and my peep sight just fell off. I found it, but not the spring and ball that apparently kept it in place (or failed to do so). No matter, I ordered a new one. Then I ordered the sight removal/installation tool. All good. But the receiver didn't fit into the removal tool, even though the seller claimed it was the right tool. Sent it back to him and am still trying to get my money back via e-bay. I ordered a different removal tool from Amazon, and this one worked perfectly. Removal of the old and installation of the new sight took all of 10 minutes. But now... the rear sight wiggles. The entire rear sight assembly seems to be a bit loose, so I may have to have some sort of set screw installed to keep it fixed in place. Half the fun is tinkering with these things anyway, and the rifle was made in the 60s, so I didn't expect something out-of-the-box-perfect. I enjoy plinking with this thing, but I think I'd enjoy bayoneting a target or two as well.
