I’ve travelled with both the car seat on the plane and just this past week used the CARES harness for my son. When we travel with the car seat we use this cheap strap (Amazon link) to bring it through the airport. Makes it super easy except when actually getting on the plane. My son actually has ridden in it like that, but it tore up the suitcase wheels with his added weight. Totally worth it though cause he was having a moment and that made him happy on a long travel day. I’m a big fan of the CARES harness now, I’ll probably use that in most cases. He fell asleep sitting up with it on most recently, and he’s also fallen asleep in the car seat forward facing. Pros for CARES: can’t kick seat in front (can in the car seat) easier to travel with easier to lay sideways across lap, and have more freedom of movement can put kid in the center of two adults (car seat has to be at window). more comfortable for the adults next to him. Pros for car seat: you have it on the plane in case of unexpected travel changes. (Missed connections, delayed etc.) familiar to kid probaby more comfortable for sitting for the kid cup holders Edit to add: having the car seat with you for delays is big. We fly direct to visit my family and WDW a lot, and I have no concerns with child transport there, but other destinations or if we have a layover I would. Direct flight to cities with good public transport (or if you have a car seat there)- I say CARES. Otherwise car seat.
