Lovecraft's maternal grandfather, Whipple Van Buren Phillips, was a Freemason. He was a successful businessman who served as a major father figure in Lovecraft's early life after his own father was institutionalized. Details about Phillips's Masonic involvement: He was a charter member and Master of Ionic Lodge No. 28 in Greene, Rhode Island, which he founded in 1870. He also held membership in Manchester Lodge No. 12. In 1900, he donated property to Ionic Lodge to help construct its building. Phillips's vast library was a strong early influence on Lovecraft, and biographers have speculated that Lovecraft likely encountered his grandfather's Masonic books in this collection. thats gotta be the root of some of it the occult = space stuff is weird but grounded. I think HPL did it 1st too. Richard Hoagland's Dark Mission is a fun read bringing the occult and the space program as a mingled topic. (speculation) real stuff happened. someone wrote it down. its been a secret for a long time because it was scary, it came from space. we expect it to trouble us again someday. its one of the books that the church tried to ban. younger dryas comet impact and resulting floods. demons from space and the ocean. records from cultures 100% wiped out (dead names) but we can read their ideas (raise the dead) it gets mythologized. big hungry things only wake to feed every few 1000 years etc. mix in the panspermia theory and now the big scary family of evil gods (actually a comet swarm) is mixed up with bringing life here in the 1st place! a "real" book of dead names could run along those lines. this info could still be quite shocking to the Victorian mind as it has abandoned god, but not yet developed tools to answer such a threat. existential crisis. the king cant help. the pope cant help. pure terror. no magic at all
