Andrew Dequasie, The Green Flame (Washington: American Chemical Society, 1991. ISBN 978-0-8412-1857-4) is a chemical engineer's memoir of the Air Force's program to develop borane jet fuels in the 1950s. It's been over thirty years since I read it, but as I recall it was pretty harrowing. Here's a better summation than just "pretty harrowing":https://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/reading_list/indices/book_957.html
